DANGERS MUST BE DEALT WITH
Article by Alister
Imagine you are in your home and a deadly shadow lurks outside that could possibly kill you. Would you feel safe? Or imagine you want to skate in your favourite skate park, except a dangerous shadow hides in the bushes, waiting to kill you. You would want something done about the danger, so you can feel safe. Now imagine going for a surf at your favourite beach. If you had heard someone had been killed there, or in surfing spots just like it, would you feel safe enough to go surfing there? Fatal shark attacks have been increasing off the West Australian coastline in recent years. Shark culling is an attempt to remove the danger so we can feel safe in our favourite surfing or swimming spots.
Have you ever ridden a bicycle before? Has your Mum ever told you to watch out for cars when you ride, and to wear a helmet in case you fall off? Well, did you know that swimming south of Perth in spring is ten times more dangerous than riding a bike, because of sharks? Sharks are a proven threat to humans, especially the great white shark, which is responsible for more fatalities than any other shark. Great white sharks are also responsible for many fatalities off the coast of Western Australia, along with tiger sharks and bull sharks. With human life at risk, it’s up to us to stop the sharks and end the danger.
Shark attacks have rapidly increased off WA’s beaches in recent years. In the last three years alone, there have been seven innocent people killed. This makes sense, because sharks are mindless killing machines, and will take anyone’s life if they get a chance. However, there are some people who think otherwise. They believe that we should protect the danger and put sharks before humans. How could they think that when shark attacks are becoming more and more common? On November 2013, Chris Boyd was taken by a great white shark, off the waters of Gracetown. His girlfriend, Krystle Westwood, had her life changed from that day forward. “He was my best mate and I had told him everything and now I come home and walk into the house and everything is there but there’s no Chris, and I just can’t handle that he’s never going to be here,” she said. “He’s never going to walk in the door. I’m never going to surf with him again. I can’t believe it. (I miss) everything about him.” Would you want something like this to happen to you? Is it worth the risk to have these things happen to anyone?
Queensland has been culling sharks for decades, and not only has there been minimal shark attacks, but everyone has been fine with the culling! If Queensland has the right to cull sharks for the safety of their people, surely Western Australia deserves that right as well! Just like skating in your favourite skate park, we all need to feel safe when we do fun and enjoyable activities. Who would want to go bushwalking with a hungry lion stalking you? You can’t enjoy life with fear breathing down your neck. You have to control it, and if necessary, destroy it before it destroys you. Queensland has been protecting their swimmers and surfers by controlling the threat, so WA should do it too.
I strongly believe that the West Australian shark culling should continue. I believe this because sharks are an increasing danger to human life, Queensland have been reducing attacks by culling sharks and innocent people like Chris Boyd don’t have to pay their lives for sharks anymore.
